PREPARATION GUIDE FOR THE POSITION OF DESIGN ENGINEER (STRUCTURAL) – DARAM ENGINEERS LTD.

1. RESEARCH THE COMPANY & THE ROLE
• Visit the company website (www.darambd.com) and review recent projects, especially those involving wood, concrete, steel structures, pools, and drainage systems.
• Understand the market segment Daram Engineers serves (engineering design & consultancy) and the typical client base in Dhaka.
• Note the office address (House 1204, 6th Floor, Avenue 11, Mirpur DOHS) and be prepared for a commute or for any directions to the interview venue.

2. MATCH YOUR QUALIFICATIONS TO THE SPECIFICATIONS
• Academic credentials – have a MSc or BSc in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
• Experience – 4‑7 years in an engineering firm, with emphasis on structural design.
• Preferred extra points – foreign experience (USA/Canada/other), familiarity with Revit, BricsCAD, and design codes (ACI, IBC, AISC, NDS).

Write a checklist and tick each item that you meet; for any gaps, plan how to demonstrate related transferable skills.

3. TECHNICAL SKILL REFINEMENT

A. AUTO‑CAD (2D & 3D)
– Review recent projects and ensure you can produce clear, dimension‑accurate drawings quickly.
– Refresh shortcuts, layer management, block libraries, and annotation standards required for structural drawings.

B. REVIT ARCHITECTURE & BRICSCAD (if you have exposure)
– Open a sample structural model and practice creating floor plates, roof systems, and structural components (beams, columns, foundations).
– Export drawings to DWG and PDF to verify compatibility with AutoCAD.

C. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS SOFTWARE
– ETABS, STAAD.Pro, Visual Analysis – run a simple multi‑storey building model: define loads, apply code‑based load combinations, and generate results (e.g., member forces, story drift).
– Practice exporting analysis results into design reports and linking them to drafting output.

D. SMath Studio
– Review scripts for common calculations (e.g., beam design, column interaction diagrams, shear wall design).
– Create a small library of reusable SMath modules that you can adapt during the interview test.

E. DESIGN CODES
– ACI 318 (concrete), IBC (building), AISC 360 (steel), NDS (wood).
– Summarize key provisions for flexural design, shear, development length, and load combinations.
– Prepare quick reference sheets you can quote in conversation.

F. DRAINAGE & HYDROLOGY
– Study storm‑drain design fundamentals: Rational method, Manning’s equation, pipe sizing, and detention basin calculations.
– Review how topographic surveys are turned into drainage layout plans (contour extraction, slope analysis).

4. PREPARE A STRONG PORTFOLIO

• Select 4‑6 projects that showcase the required material types (wood, concrete, steel, aluminum) and building categories (residential, commercial, pools).
• For each project include:
– Brief description (client, scope, project value).
– Your role (design, drafting, calculation, code checking).
– Key drawings (plan, section, detail) – include both AutoCAD and Revit screenshots.
– Analysis results (ETABS/STAAD screenshots, load tables).
– Any code‑specific challenges you solved.
• Compile the portfolio in a PDF no larger than 10 MB; name the file “YourName_Daram_DesignPortfolio.pdf”.

5. UPDATE YOUR RESUME & COVER LETTER

Resume
– Use a clean, chronological format.
– Highlight “Structural Design Engineer” with years of experience, software proficiency, and code expertise.
– Add a “Key Projects” section that mirrors the portfolio items.
– Include an “International Experience” line if applicable.

Cover Letter (max one page)
– Address the hiring manager (if name unavailable, use “Dear Hiring Team”).
– State why Daram Engineers interests you (mention their portfolio or specific project you admire).
– Summarize how your 4‑7 years of experience, AutoCAD/Revit mastery, and code knowledge meet the job requirements.
– End with a call‑to‑action: request an interview and provide contact details.

6. PRACTICE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Technical
– Explain the design process you follow from concept to construction documents for a multi‑storey concrete frame.
– How do you decide between hot‑rolled and cold‑formed steel sections?
– Walk us through a recent drainage design you completed: data sources, software used, and final layout.
– Describe a situation where you had to apply ACI 318 provisions to a non‑standard condition.

Software
– Demonstrate how you would convert an AutoCAD 2D structural drawing into a 3D Revit model.
– Show a quick workflow for generating a bill of quantities directly from an ETABS model.

Behavioral
– Provide an example of meeting a tight deadline imposed by a regulatory authority.
– Discuss a time you worked in a multidisciplinary team and how you handled communication challenges.

Language
– Prepare to discuss technical concepts clearly in English; practice describing calculations and code references aloud.

7. PRE‑INTERVIEW LOGISTICS

• Print a few copies of your resume, cover letter, and portfolio (use high‑quality paper).
• Bring a notebook and a pen for taking notes.
• Dress in business‑formal attire (e.g., navy suit, white shirt, plain tie).
• Arrive 10‑15 minutes early; plan your route to Mirpur DOHS, considering traffic patterns in Dhaka.

8. APPLICATION SUBMISSION

• Email your CV, cover letter, and portfolio to daramengg@gmail.com (subject line: “Design Engineer – Your Name – Application”).
• In the body of the email, write a brief introduction (2–3 sentences) and attach the documents.
• Keep the email concise and free of spelling/grammar errors.

9. FOLLOW‑UP

– After sending the application, wait 3–4 business days.
– If you have not received an acknowledgement, send a polite follow‑up email referencing your application date and expressing continued interest.

10. CONTINGENCY PREPARATION

• If called for a technical test, ensure you have a laptop with AutoCAD, Revit, ETABS/STAAD, and SMath Studio installed and fully licensed.
• Prepare a short cheat‑sheet of code formulas (ACI, AISC, NDS) that you can glance at during a timed exercise.
• Have a backup power source (portable charger) in case of power interruptions.

FINAL TIP
Approach the interview as a demonstration of both your technical mastery and your ability to communicate solutions clearly. Align every answer with how you can add value to Daram Engineers, meet client expectations, and contribute to timely project delivery. Good luck!
