PREPARING FOR THE INTERN – ACCESS TO FINANCE POSITION
Heifer International Bangladesh

1. RESEARCH THE ORGANIZATION
• Visit the Heifer International website and read about its mission, values, and programs in Bangladesh.
• Understand the “Access to Finance” thematic area – how Heifer links smallholder farmers with bank loans and enterprise development.
• Familiarise yourself with the country office’s recent projects, partners, and success stories.

2. KNOW THE ROLE AND EXPECTATIONS
• Verification of loan nominations – learn the basic criteria banks use for micro‑enterprise loans (collateral, repayment capacity, business plan).
• Database enrichment – brush up on Excel skills: data entry, VLOOKUP, pivot tables, and basic data cleaning.
• Follow‑up and repayment tracking – understand repayment schedules, overdue handling, and typical communication templates.
• Field visits – anticipate traveling to farms or small businesses, observing loan utilization, and assessing viability.
• Stakeholder communication – practice concise email writing to coop managers, technical officers, and partners.

3. BUILD RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
• Finance basics – read introductory material on micro‑finance, loan products, interest calculations, and risk assessment.
• Business analysis – learn how to evaluate a simple enterprise: revenue streams, cost structure, profit margin, and growth potential.
• Microsoft Office – complete short online tutorials for Excel (especially formulas, conditional formatting, and chart creation) and PowerPoint (making clear, visual presentations).
• Report writing – practice drafting brief reports on field observations, including key findings, recommendations, and next steps.

4. PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
• CV – highlight any coursework, projects, internships, or part‑time jobs related to finance, business analysis, or community development.
• Cover Letter – address it to the Country Director. State why you are interested in Heifer’s work, how your academic background (B.Com or BBA) aligns with the responsibilities, and give a concrete example of a time you verified data or followed up on a task with minimal supervision.
• Photograph – use a recent, professional‑looking headshot in a standard passport format.

5. TAILOR YOUR APPLICATION TO THE SPECIFICATIONS
• Emphasise interpersonal and communication skills – mention any presentations, group projects, or volunteer coordination you have done.
• Show ability to work independently – describe a situation where you managed multiple tasks without close oversight.
• Demonstrate confidentiality – if you have handled sensitive information (e.g., academic records, financial data), note it briefly.

6. PRACTICE FOR THE INTERVIEW
• Review common interview questions for finance‑related internships: “How would you verify a loan application?”, “What steps would you take if a borrower missed a repayment?” and “How do you prioritize tasks when you have competing deadlines?”
• Prepare STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) stories that illustrate: data verification, database management, field observations, and teamwork with diverse stakeholders.
• Be ready to discuss your knowledge of micro‑finance in Bangladesh and any relevant local context (e.g., typical loan sizes, common agricultural enterprises).
• Dress modestly and professionally; arrive early for the interview (or test your internet connection and webcam if it is virtual).

7. LOGISTICAL PREPARATION
• Ensure you can commit to the office hours (8:30 am – 5:30 pm, Sunday to Thursday) and the six‑month duration.
• Arrange transportation for field visits; familiarize yourself with the areas where Heifer’s partners operate.
• Prepare a simple notebook or digital tool for field notes, photos, and observations.

8. AFTER SUBMISSION
• Send a polite email confirming receipt of your application if you do not receive an acknowledgment within a few days.
• Keep a copy of all submitted documents and note the deadline (December 10 2025).
• If shortlisted, respond promptly to any interview scheduling requests and ask for clarification on any aspect of the role you are unsure about.

By following these steps you will present yourself as a well‑prepared, motivated candidate who understands the responsibilities of the Intern – Access to Finance position and can contribute effectively to Heifer International Bangladesh’s mission. Good luck!
