Prepare a strong application for the ICRC Police & Security Forces (PGE) Program Adviser role by following these steps.

First, research the International Committee of the Red Cross. Read its mandate, recent operations in Bangladesh and the region, and its core values of impact, collaboration, respect and compassion. Familiarise yourself with the latest public statements on international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) that the ICRC promotes. Study how the ICRC interacts with police and armed forces, especially in contexts similar to Bangladesh, to be able to speak fluently about the organisation’s approach during interviews.

Second, analyse the job description in detail. Identify each required competency – eight years of experience with armed forces, police or humanitarian work; senior military or police rank; knowledge of principles governing the use of force; training experience on IHL/IHRL; a university degree in law, international relations or a related field; and the ability to work autonomously. Write them down and compare them with your own background. For any gaps, think of transferable experiences that demonstrate the same skill set (for example, experience managing security‑related projects, delivering legal training, or coordinating multi‑agency workshops).

Third, update your CV to match the role. Use a clear chronological format. In the professional experience section, highlight positions that involved interaction with police, military or security forces, especially any senior leadership or advisory roles. For each role, list concrete achievements: number of training sessions delivered, size of beneficiary groups, policy changes influenced, budgets managed, and reports produced. Emphasise any experience drafting strategy documents, monitoring programme implementation, or conducting stakeholder mapping. Include a short “Key competencies” block that lists: IHL/IHRL training, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, budget oversight, report writing, and autonomous work. Make sure your education section shows a relevant degree and any additional certificates in humanitarian law, security sector reform or conflict management.

Fourth, craft a targeted cover letter. Begin with a brief introduction stating why you are motivated to join the ICRC and how your background aligns with the Programme Adviser’s purpose. Follow with two or three paragraphs that directly address the main duties: (1) experience mapping armed‑carrier structures and political‑security contexts; (2) drafting and monitoring programme strategies and budgets; (3) designing and delivering dissemination activities on IHL/IHRL, including content creation and logistical coordination; (4) building and sustaining networks with police and security forces. Provide specific examples and quantify results where possible. Conclude by reiterating your commitment to the ICRC’s humanitarian mission and your readiness to start on 1 April 2026.

Fifth, gather supporting documents. Prepare scanned copies of your diploma, any certifications on IHL/IHRL, security‑sector‑reform training, and proof of senior rank (service record or appointment letter). If you have participated in UN missions or other international deployments, obtain the relevant mission completion certificates. Ensure all documents are clear, legible and in PDF format.

Sixth, practice interview preparation. Anticipate questions about:

- how you have handled complex security environments and maintained neutrality;
- examples of successful training sessions on IHL/IHRL and how you measured impact;
- your approach to developing a programme strategy that aligns with operational priorities;
- ways you have built trust with police or military stakeholders while promoting respect for humanitarian law;
- challenges you faced when working autonomously and how you overcame them.

Prepare concise STAR‑structured answers (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Rehearse delivering them aloud, focusing on clear articulation and calm confidence.

Seventh, stay up‑to‑date on current events in Bangladesh. Review recent security‑sector reforms, police‑force restructuring, and any incidents where IHL or IHRL issues have been raised. Be ready to discuss how you would incorporate this knowledge into programme planning and stakeholder engagement.

Eighth, network if possible. Identify any current or former ICRC staff in Bangladesh or neighboring countries on professional platforms. Reach out politely for informational conversations to gain insight into day‑to‑day work, organisational culture and expectations for the Programme Adviser role.

Ninth, submit the application through BDJOBS before the deadline of 16 December 2025. Double‑check that every required field is completed, attach the CV, cover letter and supporting documents, and confirm receipt by email if the system provides a confirmation.

Finally, after submission, set a reminder to follow up politely after one week if you have not received an acknowledgement. Prepare a brief thank‑you note in case you are invited to an interview, reinforcing your enthusiasm and the key strengths you bring to the ICRC.

By systematically aligning your experience with the ICRC’s requirements, presenting clear documented evidence, and demonstrating a deep understanding of humanitarian law and the security context in Bangladesh, you will maximize your chances of progressing to the interview stage and securing the Programme Adviser position.
